I had been accepted into nursing school, and was about to embark on the journey to becoming an RN. While talking about this big milestone in my life, someone very close to me said, “you won’t be able to do that”.
Many years ago my husband and I had felt a burden for youth, and had not uttered a word to anyone. This was a calling from God and it was placed on hearts. Then one day it was mentioned about us becoming the youth leaders at our church. Someone very close to us said, “they’re not ready for that”.
We felt the call to evangelize, and I could write a full blog post on the negative words spoken to us.
But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7
If you have been in very many church services, you have probably heard this scripture referenced. Don’t let me lose you. I am going somewhere. This scripture is right before Samuel anoints David to be king. This shows us that one of the reasons God chose David was because of his heart. We see other places in scripture (Acts 13:22, 1 Samuel 13:14) that David is chosen as man after the Lord’s heart.
And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle. 1 Samuel 17:28
David had been chosen. David had been prepared. David was about to be used by God to defeat Goliath. This made David’s brother angry, one of the people closest to David, a person who I would dare to say knew David very well. He questioned David’s motive, and with his words he spoke with words untrue statements attacking David’s heart. The very reason God chose David. The words came from his brother before he went into a battle to defeat Goliath.
A few verses later we see Saul saying to David, “Thou art not able…” “... for thou art but a youth…”
David was about to be elevated. David had been prepared for this moment, for this battle. He had been in a wilderness caring for sheep, fighting a lion and bear. He, his heart, was chosen. What did he hear from those closest and others near him?
You’re prideful.
Your heart is evil.
You have just come to watch.
You're not able to do this.
You’re too young.
David responded with an attitude of I can do this, God had prepared me for this moment. Saul tried to get David to do it with his own armor. David refused.
The way that you do what God has called you to do will not look like others. When God chooses you, He equips you with the tools that you need. It doesn’t have to look, or operate, like someone else's
There is something about knowing God has chosen you, because you know the Lord provides the deliverance. You know that you cannot do it on your own. You also know that when God calls and prepares, He does what He says.
Maybe in man’s eyes you are too young or using the wrong method’s. Maybe those around you don’t see how God has been preparing you. Rise up, and do it anyway.
I graduated nursing school just before my twentieth birthday and passed the test to get my license around a month later.
Within six months of the above statements, we were youth leaders.
We are a little over two years full time on the road.
There are spiritual elevations that man may not be able to see with the natural eye, there are physical elevations, and there are spiritual elevations that are also seen with the natural eye. In all of these instances in my personal life, there have been words there that if I (we) would have listened to, we would have never stepped into the next level that God had for us.
Be like David today, and do it anyway. Do what God has called you to do. Don’t get discouraged whenever those around you don’t see your calling from God. Soon they will see, and the song will be sung, “Saul slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands”. Not because you're better, but because whenever you fulfill what God calls and prepares you for, regardless of the voices around, God delivers.
